TURNING 15 ON THE ROAD TO FREEDOM,
LYNDA BLACKMON LOWERY, AUTHOR
Lynda Blackmon Lowery was born in 1950 in segregated Selma, Alabama. She lost her mother when she was only 7 years old. Her mother didn’t have access to medical care because she was black. Lynda didn’t want this to happen to anyone else and started fighting for the voting rights of black people.
‘When Lynda was 13 years old, she heard Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speak at a church in Selma. It was a transformative experience for her. She felt as though he was talking directly to her. He fixed his gaze on her and explained that you could change anyone with “steady, loving confrontation.”’ (BERNARD’S BOYS (stbernards.org))
By the time she was 15 years old, she’d been in prison 9 times.
She endured difficult conditions and, most importantly, she overcame her fears. Lynda explained, “We were determined to do something and we did it. If you are determined, you can overcome your fears, and then you can change the world.” On August 6, 1965, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.https://www.stbernards.org/list-detail?pk=94739
What the book is about:
The book is autobiographical and tells the story of the fight for voting rights in Alabama in the 1960s and her part in it. Lynda started to rebel at a very early age with sit-ins at school and knew how important it is to make a stand. As a big fan of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. she supported peaceful protests.
Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom is sure to appeal to anyone with an interest in American history and the Civil Rights Movement. (www.supersummary.com/turning-15-on-the-road-to-freedom/summary/)
Gabriel’s opinion:
He liked the book because it is about an historical event and he is very interested in history. It’s easy to read (‘too easy sometimes’), with illustrations and he’d recommend it to everyone interested in history.
